“Boring or Not, Holiday Newsletters are Wanted”

Published by writingtips under Uncategorized Edit This

The Family Holiday Letter

Several years ago, Ann Landers wrote a column berating holiday newsletters and put the “kibosh on Christmas newsletters.” She paid the price and wrote the following:

Here it is in March, and I’m still getting blistering letters for putting the kibosh on Christmas newsletters…Let it be known to one and all that I take it back. Start now to gather facts for your 1996 Christmas newsletter. Don’t leave out anything.  People really do want details of your face lift and tummy tuck, your daughter-in-law’s tubal ligation and your husband’s hair transplant. Tell them about your cocker spaniel’s litter…I apologize for discouraging folks from sending those newsy chronicles loaded with personal details. Please reactivate the tradition, Obviously, I’m out of the loop.”

5 Ways to Write a Good Holiday Letter

So people do like receiving the family holiday letters and enjoy knowing that someone cares enough to fill them in on their lives. But lets face it…sometimes those letters are a pain to read. So if your planning to send out your own family holiday letter, here are some tips to make it easier on your readers:

1. Choose 4~6 major events of the year and write about only those.

2. Break up the text by putting an extra line between paragraphs.

3. Increase the font size for the letters to your grandparents.

4. Print the letter on light colored paper.

5. Include digital pictures at the bottom of the letter instead of paying to print the photos.
